What is Swiss Type CNC lathe?

A Swiss type  CNC lathe, also known as a Swiss automatic lathe, Swiss screw machine, or Swiss turning machine, was originally developed for the Swiss watchmaking industry. The traditional lathe is processing by moving tools, which achieve parts machining by rotating spindle and moving tools in various directions.

There is no need to rotate and switch the tool of Swiss type CNC lathe, as it can be done by moving workpiece up and down. The parts machining can be performed through the rotation and moving of spindle, and the material can be fed in multiple times. Compared with the traditional lathe,  CNC Swiss type automatic lathe can produce high precision parts by using the center guide sleeve, which makes it has great advantage on the machining of slender shaft parts.

The center guide sleeve can move and switch in various direction according to the position or direction of Z2, X2, C2. Which main function is to perform material splicing and auxiliary processing for the main spindle. The subsequent processing of some parts need be processed on the secondary spindle with the corresponding tool carrier, and the used control channel is separate from the main spindle, which makes the sub-spindle and main spindle won't be interfered by each other.  During the practical machining, both two spindles are used at the same time, which can raise the manufacturing efficiency highly.

What's the difference between Swiss machining and traditional turning?

The biggest difference of Swiss type lathe and traditional lathe is that the material of Swiss type lathe is moving, but the tool of traditional lathe is moving. On the one hand,  the production auxiliary time of the Swiss machining is reduced, on the other hand the the producing cycle and waiting time of jigs are cut down, which can increase the the production efficiency significantly. Along with the decrease of clamping, the precision is improved. The structure of side milling will optimize the usage of machine space amazingly. At the same time, most of these Swiss type lathe have online detecting function, which can realize the in-position detection and precision control during manufacturing.

What's the advantages of Swiss type lathe?

1. Continuous Machining

Usually, the max headstock stroke of Swiss type lathe is over 200mm. If the length of the parts is 5mm, the Swiss type lathe could process 20 - 30 pieces of parts continuously with just once clamping.

2. High Stiffness

When CNC Swiss type automatic lathe is turning, the material is fixed to the closest position. So the stiffness is very good. Imagine the situation, if the lathe machine clamped the parts, and the tool processing the parts on the position which is few millimeters away the fixture. How nice the rigidity can be?

3. One-time Complete Machining

Swiss type automatic lathe consist of both turning and milling function, the complexity of one-time processing is also better than old-fashioned automatic lathe. Because the spindle Z can move forwards and backwards, and the knife can also move on the direction of X, Y, which enable the Swiss type lathe realize three-dimensional processing, as well one-time complete machining.　

What's the limitation of CNC Swiss type automatic lathe?

The biggest limitation of Swiss type automatic lathe is the diameter of bar material. At present, the largest type of Swiss type CNC lathe can only process parts with a diameter of 38mm.
