As the name implies, 5-axis machining is a form of CNC machining in which the tool can move along five axes instead of the usual three.
So how does this work? With a 3-axis CNC machine, the spindle moves up and down, left and right, and back and forth. In addition to this 3-axis motion, the 5-axis machine has two other axes in play: the table swings left and right on two different axes, or the spindle itself rotates on two axes.
Either of these methods (more on their differences later) allows the cutting tool to approach the workpiece from an infinite number of angles, which makes it possible to create highly complex shapes.
It also reduces the number of setups required: the machinist does not have to manually flip the workpiece, as the tool can easily reach more positions. This makes the whole machining process very, very fast.
5-axis CNC machines can differ from each other in another important way. Some 5-axis machines use so-called "simultaneous" 5-axis machining, while others use the "3+2-axis" method.
Simultaneous 5-axis
Simultaneous (or continuous) 5-axis machining is a form of 5-axis machining in which the machine can adjust its motion continuously in all five axes without pausing. Simultaneous 5-axis CNC can be very fast because there are no interruptions between cutting tool passes.
True 5-axis Machining Center
3+2 Axis
Another form of 5-axis machining is the 3+2 axis, when the tool is not along the X, Y and Z axes. This form of 5-axis machining may be slower than a simultaneous 5-axis CNC, but may result in more rigid parts and longer tool life.
3+2 Machining Center or Positional 5 axis Machining Center
5-axis CNC machines can be configured in different ways. They both have spindles that move along the X, Y and Z axes, but the machine can have two "extra" axes added in different ways.
The most common types of 5-axis CNC machines are trunnion machines and rotary rotating machines. Some machines combine the functions of both.
Trunnion 5-Axis Machines
A trunnion CNC machine is a CNC milling machine with a moving table. This means that the angle of the workpiece attached to the table can be adjusted so that the tool can strike the material from different angles.
Trunnion machines have an A-axis and a C-axis, and their benefits include better undercutting access, effective removal of heavy material, and greater overall workload.
Rotary 5-axis machines
A rotary CNC machine is a CNC milling machine with a rotating spindle. The addition of B and C axes to the spindle allows the cutting tool to impact the material from a different angle, but in a different manner than a trunnion machine.
The benefits of a rotary 5-axis CNC machine include the ability to handle heavy parts because the table remains stationary and is compatible with shorter tools - effectively reducing chatter and improving accuracy.
